Morocco is divided into 4 different feature of the natural landscape.
The Mountains
The Atlas mountain range is the most impressive feature of Morocco landscape. They are divided as Middle Atlas, High Atlas and Anti Atlas. The High Atlas have vast fertile valley where you would fall in love with the rivers and waterfalls. The overall terrain is beautiful and offers something for everyone. There are hiking trails as well as mountain biking tails. You can also take mules and horses available in the villages in these valleys if you don’t want to walk. The beauty of nature can be caught on camera and you have amazing beauty to create a good collection for yourself. The High Atlas is home to the Berbers who come across as friendly and hospitable people. There are nice little villages like Oukaimeden (which has the best know snow skiing resort in Morocco), Tinerhir, Immouzer etc, all with their specialties. The Northwest Atlas is also worth visiting as it is a combination of fertile coastal plain, a dry steppe like but bit lesser fertile plateau and strip at the foot of the mountains that is rich in water providing for many great orchards.
There are other mountains here which are a must visit for the adventure lovers. You would find such a fine variety of flora and foliage as well as some fascinating variety of natural structures here that you would wish to come back to explore more. The Amtoudi Peak (known for the best preserved agadirs (granaries) in North Africa), Chefchaouen Mountains (steep terrain offering maximum challenge), Setti Gatma (brilliant trails and stunning waterfalls), Tafraoute Mountains (striking, pink colored rocky mountains), Oregano Mountains (covered with oregano plants), Tan Tan mountains (the only flat topped mountains) and the Sarhro Mountains make it a great location.
Rif Region
The beautiful Rif is a mountain range that extends from Tangier in the west to the Moulouya River in the east and the Mediterranean sea in the north to the river of Ouargha in the south. The mountain region derives its name from the Berber word, arif. They belong to the Alboran Sea region but are not a part of the Atlas Mountains. The region is well known for its geographic diversity, as it is home to mountains, the sea, rivers, and hills. Major cities in the region are Nador, Al Hoceima, Ajdir and Taza, among others.
The Rif was initially inhabited by the Berbers and was later invaded by the Phoenicians in the 3rd century BC, followed by the Romans and the Byzantines. The high plateau of Eastern Morocco: In the rain shadow region of the Atlas chain lies the broad valley of Moulouya. It stretches for about 530 kms rights from the Middle Atlas and goes right up to the Mediterranean Sea. Set to the southeast of the Atlas Mountains, this is a plateau formation at an altitude of 1300m (3900 feet). It stretches in the eastern direction to the Moroccan-Algerian border. It abruptly drops to the southwest and make a smoother transition toward the coastline. There are different small towns like Asni, Tin Mal that you can check out. The artificial lake Lalla Takerkoust created due the hydroelectric dam serves as a good source for the villages around it.
The Sahara Desert
The part of the Sahara desert that falls in Morocco is called as Moroccan Sahara or the Southern province. This is the part which is mostly administered by Morocco but has been a disputed territory for sometime now. There are small towns that have sprung up around the oasis which can be a great location for those wanting to enjoy the camel excursion into the desert. The popular activities are sunrise and sunset camel rides over the sand dune, ATV/4x4 trips and dune boarding. You can catch a glimpse of the tradition Berber villages here that have been beautifully preserved.
The beaches
After you trips to the sands of the Western Sahara you can find it even more amazing to walk the sands of the Mediterranean coast. You can have a wonderful time swimming at the beaches of most of the coastal towns like Agadir. Long clean beaches with a lot of beach side activity, hotels are a great spot to can a tan and enjoy the tranquil lying on the sands. Fishing, wind surfing spots in the pristine blue waters are a treat to remember.
